5. Ripley Castle
A sad figure dressed in 19th century costume has been sighted at Ripley Castle. Said to be the ghost of Lady Alicia Ingilby, who lost her only two children to meningitis in the 1870s, has been seen walking towards the children’s bedrooms before passing through a locked door. Photo: Bruce Rollinson
6. Cavendish Hotel
The Cavendish Hotel on Valley Drive is now closed and empty, however passers-by have claimed that they have seen a grey haired man sitting on the edge of a bed late at night where the figure then rose and walked towards the window, before suddenly vanishing into thin air. Photo: Archive
7. Spofforth Castle
The ruins of Spofforth Castle are haunted by an indistinguishable half human shape. A group of schoolchildren and their teacher saw the phenomena in 1969 and two picnickers also witnessed `the ghostly suicide` in 1973. For those who do visit, there is a rather cold and empty feeling when walking around the ramparts, almost as if it is filled with some great sorrow. Photo: Gary Longbottom
8. Fountains Abbey
Fountains Abbey was built in 1132 and has a number of ghostly visitors. In the past, a ghostly choir has been heard chanting in the Chapel of Nine Altars, and in the nearby Fountains Hall, it is believed that the daughter of Sir Stephen Proctor, who built the hall, haunts this hall and is expected to do so for the rest of eternity.
