The Nidderdale Voices column with Lizzie Clayton

One of the first shops that you see when you leave Pateley car park is Clayton’s Carpets. It is right there in front of you and you are unable to miss it. If we happen to be enjoying a little summer weather the door will be open revealing an Aladdin’s cave of beautiful things. Simon, Lizzie’s husband, is responsible for the flooring side of the business leaving Lizzie to concentrate on luxuriant items for your home.

Lizzie is a real Dale’s lass. She came from a farming family and was brought up in Glasshouses, attending Glasshouses school and then going on to Upper Nidderdale.

Describe a typical day

My days are pretty full because as well as a dog and three cats we have a four year old son Oliver.

At the moment Olly comes to the shop with me. All the home furnishings are my responsibility and I am trying to showcase something different for your home.

I have concentrated on the Wrendale designs for cushions and cards and I also stock Sophie Allport pottery and kitchen ware. My next addition will be perfumed candles. Ordering new products, arranging displays and talking to customers makes the day go very quickly.

If you want something that is out of the ordinary to make your home special just come and have a look around.

What would be a perfect day out?

I’m all for retail therapy. I don’t mean buying groceries, I mean shopping for clothes. A good day in Harrogate or York always perks me up no end.

If we were to do something as a family I would say a day at the seaside. Unfortunately, this would have to be in the autumn as we will not want to leave the shop during the high summer, tourist season.

What is your favourite Nidderdale business?

I enjoy using all the shops on the High Street and I would really hate to pick one.

Bearing this in mind, could I answer this question by saying what business I would have liked to have started if I had not developed home furnishings? I love cats and my perfect business to run would be a cattery. To be able to spend time just looking after cats, grooming them and just having them around would be absolute heaven.

What is your favourite part of the Dale?

I love the peace and quiet of Bouthwaite where I live at the moment. I also love the colour and activity of Pateley.

As we are hopefully shortly moving down to live in Pateley I shall probably find life very different. One good thing is that we will not have to get out of bed so early in a morning. Living nearer to work will I am sure have its advantages.

What is the biggest change you have seen in Nidderdale?

I am answering this as a very personal question. The biggest change to me has been from being a paid shop assistant to suddenly becoming responsible for a whole part of the shop.

Before, I used to go home after a day’s work and just forget everything. Now, I have to think about what I am ordering and whether or not it will sell.

What makes Nidderdale special and why would you recommend it?

Nidderdale has everything – friendly people, beautiful scenery and plenty to do if you come here for a holiday.

If there is one thing that you could change what would it be?

I would like to see the Millennium Green cleared up and made beautiful again.

It is a lovely spot that has sadly seemed to be forgotten.
