Harrogate Borough Council’s planning committee will consider plans for a new entrance and exit to the site at a planning committee next Tuesday (November 25).

Committee members have been recommended to approve the plans by council officers.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “We are still hoping to open our new store at The Skipton and our plans will soon be considered by the planning committee.”

He added that some changes have been made to the plans following community feedback.

These include; one way exit onto Bilton Lane to help to manage traffic flow, raised pedestrian walkways, more landscaping across the site.

Over 100 concerned parents have signed a petition at Bilton Grange School, opposing the planned conversion.

Head teacher Judith Ratcliffe said: “I am concerned about the proposed exit and entrance onto Bilton Lane. The safety of the children is of paramount importance.”

More than 50 people commented on the application online with many residents opposing the plans based on the road layout being so close to Bilton Grange School.

Mum Susan Davies commented online and said: “The Skipton pub becoming a Tesco. Not only do we not need another convenience store in the Bilton area but I am concerned with the planned access being opposite my child’s school and onto an already busy junction.”

Due to a ‘loophole’ in planning regulations, supermarkets do not need change of use planning permission to change a pub to a convenience store, though Tesco would need permission for access and new doors.

If Tesco’s proposals are approved, the Bilton Dragons Bowling Club will be provided them with a secure future for the length of Tesco’s lease.
