Taylors of Harrogate this week hosted the winners of its Tea and Coffee Awards 2012.
Tea growers Lujeri Tea Estates Lts from Malawi and coffee cultivators Expocaccer from Brazil were in town to collect their awards, and see first-hand how Taylors uses their products.
Both suppliers have received grants from the Taylors Social and Environmental Support Grant Scheme, set up to help suppliers improve social or environmental standards on their estates.
Joao Ferreira Junior, Speciality Coffees Manager at Expocaccer told the Harrogate Advertiser: “We are very happy to receive the award from Taylors, it shows they are determined to have good coffee.
“It is nice for us to come where the coffee is produced. Here they are very careful to keep the character of good coffee, and that is important to us.
“We are hoping to put the grant money towards a new school in Brazil. The project shows the relationship between us and the community.”
Ian Brabbin, Head of Tea Buying at Taylors said: “The award winners are judged on criteria such as quality, consistency and service, such as getting the teas to us on time.
“Then we have the social and environmental interests. This is what we and the supplier can do to help the community or their estate.
“We go and visit suppliers every year, and they spend time in Harrogate with us as well.
“It is more than just a good cup of tea or coffee. Sustainable projects and attention to detail are very important.”
All Taylors suppliers can apply for the Grant, which is capped at £2,000, which must be match-funded by the supplier.
