The Starbeck community has rallied together to raise enough money to send a much-loved resident with terminal cancer on a holiday to Tenerife with her son.

Debbie Brooks was diagnosed with small bowel cancer in July last year, after years of living with Crohn’s disease. Debbie had a tumour removed, but in the following months it progressed into incurable metastatic lymphadenopathy.

Just 24 hours after launching a JustGiving page to raise money for a memory-making holiday for Debbie, the initial fundraising target of £800 was met and exceeded, and currently stands at £1,362.

Debbie said: “I can’t believe it, I feel really very overwhelmed. I am absolutely speechless. I just want to say a big thank you to everybody who has donated, and I am just amazed by the generosity of people, I really am.

“Hopefully now I can look forward to having a nice holiday with my son.”

Friend Natalie Wilkins said: “It is testament to the community that is Starbeck, they really do rally round and look after their own. Debbie has been a part of the Starbeck community for most of her life, and she deserves all of the support and help, she really does.

“We got to the target in 24 hours, and now she will go on an amazing holiday with her boy, where she will be able to make some very precious memories.

"The generosity of people has just been amazing, and I can’t believe how quickly it all happened.

"The response to the JustGiving page has been fantastic.”
