St Andrews Welcome centre: this was a lovely day with a busy morning firstly with lots of groups taking part. So many voluntary groups are held in Starbeck and it was good to see their displays and chat to the various organisers. Then the new centre was cleared and the formal opening began. I was honoured to have been asked to unveil the plaque on behalf of the people of Starbeck and there were speeches from Andrew Jones MP, the Bishop and Mike Langford who has led the project. The builders, architects and surveyors all received presentations and a time capsule is to be placed behind the plaque. Next came lunch served in a transformed church complete with white cloths and silverware and flowers on all the tables. An excellent lunch was ably served by the youngsters from the church with a musical interlude. It was a pleasure to meet so many people and I’m sure the new welcome centre will be a great asset to our community.
Starbeck Community Fund: the applications have to be submitted by September 27 so hurry! You can send them in on line directly to Garry Atkins who deals with the applications on behalf of Harrogate Borough Council. The grant panel will sit in October and successful applicants will then be notified. This fund has been a tremendous help to many voluntary groups over the years, helping to buy equipment and improve facilities and to sustain the Christmas lights and Starbeck in Bloom.
Starbeck Library: at the latest meeting of the Friends of Starbeck Library Deborah reported that the library was continuing to perform well and now the library is open for even longer thanks to all the volunteers. There is now wi-fi in the library and you can even download books on to e-readers.All sounds very technical to me but I’m sure the librarians will explain it better! Do you know of anyone who would appreciate having books delivered? there are vacancies on the housebound delivery routes- just let the library staff know. Don’t forget the coffee morning every Saturday and the monthly second hand book sales to raise money for the friends .
