Sports stars to visit college for summer series

Major figures from the sporting world of gymnastics, cricket, netball and hockey will be making guest appearances at Harrogate's Ashville College this summer.

Four well-known sportsmen and sportswomen will each spend a day at the school - which this August is playing host to Active Camps – inspiring youngsters aiming to improve their chosen sport.

Previous big names to have attended the camps include gymnast Louis Smith, cricket legends Andrew “Freddie”2 Flintoff, Jimmy Anderson and Dominic Cork, and netballers Nat Haythornthwaite, Emma Dovey, Olivia Murphy and Amanda Newton.

First out of the blocks is Louis Smith Gymnastics Academy, which is being held between August 3-5. This is followed by the Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy (August 8-12); Netball Fever (August 17-19) and, finally, the Hockey Masterclass taking place between August 24-26.

Anna Rakusen-Guy, Ashville Trading Events and Lettings manager, said: “Once again we are delighted that our extensive sports facilities have been chosen to host these very popular activity camps.

“They are always very well attended by children from across the Harrogate District keen to improve their sporting skills.

“And, thanks to the forthcoming Rio Olympics, participation in sports will no doubt see a sharp rise in the number of people wanting to get active.

“Whilst we don’t yet know who the guest coaches are, I can guarantee that each one has represented their individual sport at the highest level. Their role is to work with the youngsters, guide them and to get the best out them.”.
