Show set to host new rural attractions to boost fun

Final preparations are being made for this year's Tockwith Show, which is set to feature a host of new attractions.

From steam engines to bee keepers, the show, on August 7, promises a great experience for all the family and an education in rural life.

Show co-chairman Sam Blacker said: “Tockwith Show is a traditional farming show at heart, but that doesn’t mean we can’t bring in new attractions every year.

“We will of course have our usual mix of classes and competitions, demonstrations and more, but it’s great to be able to expand what we do year on year too.”

For the first time this year, two steam engines will be at the show: a 1919 McLaren and a 1924 George White. Bee keeping is set to be a big attracting in the Discovery Zone, where children are invited to try their hand at a variety of rural crafts and activities.

Several new businesses will be welcomed into the Farmers’ Market marquee, while Ladies in Pigs will demonstrate how to make their unusual yet delicious bacon brownies. Visitors browsing the marquee can enjoy the sounds of the Collavoce Choir performing too.

Elsewhere, the main ring will see the dog show raising funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind, while local pub-goers compete in the tug-o-war competition.

For the first time, a dairy experience will be on offer, with local dairy farmer Tom Hildreth bringing one of his dairy cows to show the crowds after he teamed up with show organisers for Open Farm Sunday in June. He will also be explaining about the challenges facing the industry, and will hand out goody bags from dairy company Arla.

Mr Blacker added: “It’s a year of firsts for us, and Tom Hildreth’s dairy experience is going to be really interesting for all our visitors.

“This will also be the first year we’ve offered a bike rack due to growing demand.”

Advance tickets are on sale until Sunday, July 31 at £7, saving £1 compared to the on-the-gate price. Children aged 16 and under go free, making it a great value day out for the whole family. For schedules and tickets, visit www.tockwithshow.org.uk.
