Scouts tidy up brings in 40 bags

A major clean up by local scouts resulted in nearly 40 black bin bags of rubbish being collected from a popular footpath.

The Harrogate and Nidderdale District Scouts Association helped the Bilton conservation Group to clear rubbish from the Greenway near Ripley Castle.

Keith Wilkinson MBE, Secretary of the Conservation Group, said: “It was immensely satisfying seeing all the rubbish that had been collected by the Scouts and their leaders.

Harrogate Borough Council had provided equipment to make the litter-pick easier although some of the items collected were too large to fit inside the black bin liners.”

The clean up was part of the Scouting County Commissioner’s Challenge for 2015 and saw the group collect a mountain of rubbish including bottles, a large wooden pallet and computer parts and cycle tyres, as well as clearing Himalyan Balsam.

District Commissioner Helen Westmancoat said: “I hope that more litter clearances will be carried out later in the year along different parts of The Greenway route.”
