Schoolgirl, 12, cooks up winning meal

A young chef from Boroughbridge High has cooked up a winning meal to beat off the opposition.

Millie Annat, 12, wowed judges in the second round of the Rotary Young Chef contest held at the school, which saw four youngsters from Nidderdale and Boroughbridge Highs challenged to produce a two-course healthy meal for £10 within 90-minutes.

Marks were awarded for a variety of skills from choice of menu, planning, hygiene to the taste and presentation of the meal.

“The standards of cooking and presentation were very high,” said Rotary spokesman Brian Souter.

“The Judges selected Millie Annat from Boroughbridge High School as the winner who progresses to the next round.”

Millie prepared a main course of apple smoked pheasant breast laid on a bed of pea risotto and wilted spinach and for her desert she prepared plant pot chocolate mousse with chocolate soil garnished with mint and edible flowers. Judges for the competition were Trevor Tuppin, Head Chef at the Bridge Hotel at Walshford and Rotary District Governor Hazel Haas.

Millie now goes on to compete in the District final at Betty’s Cookery School in February. The national competition is sponsored by Berio, Italian Olive oil producer.

“Knaresborough Rotary Club support the Young Chef Competition because they believe that cooking a healthy meal is an important life skill.

“The competition aims to encourage young people to develop cookery and food presentation skills, consider healthy eating options, and develop organisational and planning skills and also an ability to cope in a demanding situation.”
