The congregation received the recognition from Buckingham Palace (s).

The card, written on behalf of the Queen by a Lady-in-Waiting at Buckingham Palace, made note of the efforts made by members of the congregation who helped make the church’s flower festival such a success.

Addressed to the Blubberhouses community, members of the congregation as well as the Friends of Blubberhouses Church, it reads: “The Queen wishes me to write and thank you for the letter sent on your behalf by Mrs Alison Bowers, following the celebration held in St Andrew's Church to mark Her Majesty's ninetieth birthday.

"It was thoughtful of Mrs Bowers to encolse for Her Majesty to see a copy of the programme for your splendid Flower Festival.

"I think you will like to know the Queen was touched by the care taken to devise and create a selection of exhibits that encompasses so many highlights of Her Majesty’s life and reign.”

The formation of the Friends group has helped the church thrive after it was threatened with closure last year.

Funding was granted this year to repair the roof of the church, which is a listed building.

Work on the church’s roof, down pipes, gutters and treatment for timber infestation, is now complete.

The Friends reported this week that there is no more daylight to be seen through the roof, and that the church is warm for services.

The next phase is to conserve the distinctive stained glass. Applications are in hand for grant funding to conserve all the windows.

On Christmas Day at 9.30 am there will be a Family service. The church is then closed until Mothering Sunday March 26, when there will be a special service at 11am.

The next social event is a Ceilidh/Barn Dance at The Hopper Lane on February 3.If you would like to receive the free newsletter about St Andrew’s, sent by email every 2/3 months, become a Friend, please email [email protected] Details are also available on
