Road closure in Knaresborough: why that crane was there!
Drivers attempting to cross Knaresborough's Low Bridge at the weekend must have wondered why it was closed on Sunday and what that large crane was doing.
The answer was straightforward - lifting tree trunks and large branches that had been washed downstream and had become log-jammed, literally, against the central stone support of Knaresborough's ancient bridge.Putting simply, the authorities were working hard to ensure the integrity of the bridge.Potentailly, fallen trees etc could restrict the flow and cause other floating debris to accumulate which, ultimately, has the potential to cause stress to the bridge support. Job done, the Low Bridge reopened just before 1pm on Sunday and the large crane departed.
