Revellers turn back clock for medieval fun

More than 2,500 people turned back the clock and got a taste of life in medieval times at Knaresborough Castle.

The English Heritage site hosted a day of sword skills, archery and falconry as part of the JORVIK Medieval Festival.

In commemoration of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt, The Royal Armouries Museum attended with combat performances and armaments display using weaponry from the time.

Visitors were also able to join in with fun crafts and activities, and tours of the castle including its sally port throughout the day, plus have a go at colourful popinjay archery.

Danielle Daglan, Director of the JORVIK Medieval Festival, gave the event a resounding thumbs-up.

“We are delighted with this year’s response to the Medieval Day at Knaresborough Castle,” she said.

“Over 2,500 people attended taking part in all kinds of medieval fun, from archery and have-a-go sword fighting to tours of this fantastic castle and Sallyport.

“The event brought together the expertise of Sheffield group Escafeld and a team from the Royal Armouries with the local team’s skills, crafters and knights – an amazing family day out.

“It was a great way to prepare for the finale of the JORVIK Medieval Festival, Medieval Merriment at York’s Merchant Adventurers’ Hall on Bank Holiday Monday.”
