Rescuers pulled a dog out of a 20ft deep hole in Nidderdale and reunited him with his delighted owners.

Paddy the spaniel became separated from them while they were out walking on Guisecliffe on Saturday.

Passing dog walkers heard him whimpering and called North Yorkshire Police, who requested the help of the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association.

A small team of local members were deployed and met Paddy’s owners, who were waiting at the top of the hole that Paddy had fallen down.

Members climbed down and quickly packaged Paddy in an animal rescue bag and hauled him out. It was the first time the innovative bag was used since it was purchased following the rescue of Sophie the boxer from the same hole a year ago.
