Forget Bear Grylls or Steve Backshall’s survival shows on TV, Harrogate Town FC are hosting a charity event where participants will really be put to the test - by sleeping under the stars all nigh tin the football ground on tomorrow.
Sustained by just a sleeping bag for warmth and some cardboard for shelter, the sponsored volunteers tomorrow, Friday, April 20, will be hoping the weather is friendlier than the last time the event was held in 2014 when temperatures fell below zero.
Organised by youth homelessness charity SASH and sponsored by Harrogate firm CNG, last year saw the charity offering 244 nights of emergency accommodation to young people in Harrogate.
This year’s event which will take place on Friday, April 20, aims to raise both awareness and funds for SASH’s work with vulnerable 16-25 year olds.
Although SASH operates strongly in York and Hull, Harrogate is the second busiest area for its work in the whole of North Yorkshire after Scarborough, accounting for 21 per cent of all the referrals it received to its emergency service last year.
The charity is keen for as many people as possible take part in the event and help spread the word about how SASH helps.
In particular, it needs more volunteers to offer a room in their home to provide emergency shelter to a young homeless person temporarily.
SASH’s business development manager Ruth Fawcett said: “If you live in the Harrogate area and are concerned about what happens to young people who have nowhere safe to stay, please join us for the Sleepout, raise some funds and tell your friends, family and colleagues.
“We need lots more supporters and volunteers in Harrogate so, if you think you can help, please get in touch.”
Jacqui Hall, managing director of CNG,said: “It’s going to be a tough night but we’re excited to be supporting SASH at the Harrogate sleepout, shedding light on the amazing work they do to help homelessness in young people in our area.
“With many people in the 16-25 age bracket within our team, it really hit home how it could easily be any of us.”
Established in 1994, SASH provides Nightstop and Supported Lodgings schemes across the region and helps over 300 young people avoid homelessness every year.
