Independent candidate steps forward in North Yorkshire's battle for Police Fire and Crime Commissioner job

Following the announcement that the Police Fire and Crime Commissioner elections for North Yorkshire are to go ahead this May 6, a retired police officer from Pateley Bridge has confirmed he will be standing as an independent.

Keith Tordoff MBE said he had been a prospective candidate last year until the election was postponed due to the Covid pandemic.

But he said he was still committed to battling his big party rivals in the PFCC elections on May 6.

Mr Tordoff, who served with the police in Leeds for 20 years, said: "I believe the role should be independent and that I have the experience and skills to work with the Police and Fire services for the people of North Yorkshire.

"I am a retired police officer, bank investigator and successful businessman.

"As a volunteer I have Chaired the Nidderdale Chamber of Trade and Pateley Bridge in Bloom group. I was awarded the MBE in 2018 for voluntary service to businesses and the community of Nidderdale.

"I am a Patron of Dementia Forward, a registered charity based in North Yorkshire.

"In such exceptional times there has most probably never been a more important time for someone to act as the bridge between the community, Police, Fire services, local councils and Government. I will be announcing my proposed policies in the coming weeks.

"If elected I would work tirelessly with the Chief Constable and Chief Fire Officer to continue supporting them in their daily challenge to keep the people in North Yorkshire and beyond safe."

Lib Dem: The party told the Harrogate Advertiser the process is underway to find a replacement for the Lib Dem PFCC candidate for North Yorkshire after the original candidate chosen Mark Christie moved on to be the Lib Dem PFCC candidate for Cumbria.

Factfile: North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner

The North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (PFCC) elections will take place on Thursday, May 6; the same day as the North Yorkshire County Council Elections.

PFCCs are elected every four years and are elected representatives who oversee a police force and fire service area.

There will be one PFCC elected for all of North Yorkshire.

The winner will replace the current commissioner Julia Mulligan, who has come to the end of her term.
