The posters which feature a pair of glaring eyes have been set up in areas known for having a problem with dog fouling.

Last year, Keep Britain Tidy trialed the innovative glow-in-the-dark posters which led to an average reduction of 46 per cent in the levels of dog fouling.

Harrogate Borough Council Dog Control Officers have visited three areas in the district which have been identified as having a problem with dog fouling - Hell Wath Playing Fields in Ripon; Castle Gardens and Bebra Gardens in Knaresborough; and the Harrogate to Ripley Cycle path. At each location, officers undertook bag and flag events to clearly show the extent of the problem and erected glow-in–the dark posters to dissuade dog owners from not cleaning up after their pets. Dog Control Officers will continue to monitor the areas for the next three weeks to see if the activity has been a success.

Coun Margaret Atkinson, Harrogate Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Safer Communities said: “The general public perceive dog fouling to be by far the most unacceptable and dirtiest type of litter. While the vast majority of dog owners are responsible people who pick up after their dogs and dispose of the waste correctly, there are a minority of irresponsible people who fail to act appropriately.

“Last year’s trial of the ‘we’re watching you’ posters showed what was possible. The glow-in-the-dark posters really made dog owners think about their actions and undoubtedly helped reduce incidents of fouling.”
