Bin collection disruption across Harrogate district likely due to coronavirus

The borough council said online: "We're working hard to make sure our waste and recycling collections (including garden waste) take place as usual, but disruption is anticipated.

"We are prioritising the collection of waste from black wheelie bins/sacks given the nature of the coronavirus outbreak.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding."

It comes as North Yorkshire County Council announced all of its household waste recycling centres are closed until further notice.

The government has also issued guidance about how waste should be dealt with - especially from households where someone has tested positive for, or is showing the symptoms of, the coronavirus.

The advice given online says: "When cleaning you should use your usual household products, like detergents and bleach, as these will be very effective at getting rid of the virus on surfaces.

"Clean frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, handrails, remote controls and table tops. This is particularly important if you have an older or vulnerable person in the house.

"Personal waste (such as used tissues) and disposable cleaning cloths can be stored securely within disposable rubbish bags. These bags should be placed into another bag, tied securely and kept separate from other waste.

"This should be put aside for at least 72 hours before being put in your usual external household waste bin."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has placed the UK on lockdown for at least three weeks as the government seeks to stem the spread of coronavirus.

It means people are now only allowed out of their homes to buy essential supplies, to exercise once a day, for medical visits or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person, or to travel to and from work.
