Baroness Blake will hand over the position of Leader of Leeds City Council to Councillor James Lewis at a meeting of the Full Council on February 24, subject to a vote at that meeting.

This follows a recent announcement in relation to Baroness Blake’s life peerage title. She is now known as Baroness Blake of Leeds, of Gledhow of the City of Leeds.

Baroness Blake said: “I am looking forward to taking up my peerage in the House of Lords and am pleased to be leaving the leadership of the council in safe and experienced hands in Councillor Lewis.

“We are working closely together on the handover of responsibilities and I know he will do a tremendous job as leader of the council.”

All peerage titles are formally announced by the Ministry of Justice in the London Gazette and the announcement regarding Baroness Blake’s title was published earlier this month.

It was announced in December that Baroness Blake had been nominated by the Labour Party to take up a life peerage in the House of Lords.

Baroness Blake will continue to be a ward Councillor representing Middleton Park until the local elections.
