Great Yorkshire Showground owner the Yorkshire Agricultural Society has been granted permission to change the ground’s use of land to set up a 71-space caravan and camp site for the Tour de France and beyond.
The Yorkshire Agricultural Society submitted a business plan to Harrogate Borough Council suggesting that opening a caravan park on the site would create employment.
The planning statement read: “There is currently a lack of caravan sites in the Harrogate district.
“Not only is the Tour de France coming but as Harrogate positions itself as THE events town in the UK, it will become increasingly important to have a large, high quality and varied accommodation offer, to suit the maximum number of visitors to our area.”
Permission was this week granted with conditions including the use of the site for a maximum of 71 touring caravans or motorhomes.
The statement added: “Utilising this site makes commerical sense, creates employment and creates another amenity for caravans in the Harrogate locality.”
The Showground is used for events as well as the Great Yorkshire Show and Countryside Live.
