Industrial units are already in the process of being demolished on the site, and 29 of the homes planned will be affordable.

Welcoming the decision, Boroughbridge Coun Robert Windass said: “It is a brownfield site, and it is good that we can build on a brownfield site. It is great to see the site being developed, and I think it is going to be transformed.

“The site has been derelict and an eyesore, and we’ve seen problems with anti-social behaviour there.”

Chris Hunter, Director at Pegasus Group’s Leeds office, said: “We are pleased to see this project progress to the next stage and look forward to our client bringing 87 much needed new homes to Boroughbridge.

“Consent had previously granted for the development of this brownfield site with officers acknowledging that it represents sustainable development.

“They also identified that there were no adverse economic, environmental or social harm that would significantly or demonstrably outweigh the benefits.”

The planning officer’s report for the development said: “The proposed development would contribute to meeting the district’s housing land supply and address the current under supply both in terms of open market and affordable units.”
