Petition seals defeat of phone mast plan

PETITIONING residents have succeeded in their fight to stop a 45ft phone mast being built in Pannal Ash Road.

Planners at Harrogate Borough Council refused the application from WFS Telecom on Monday after a petition was submitted by residents opposed to the scheme.

John Swales had set up the petition, which he placed in the old Post Office at Rossett Green Lane, securing more than 150 signatures.

Ward councillor Jim Clark, who submitted the final petition to planners last Friday, said: “This is very good news, I’m very pleased that the council has listened to the views and concerns of local residents.”

The 13.8m phone mast would have served Vodafone and O2, to provide a better signal for mobile phones and 3G devices.

The application was refused on the grounds that there was an “insufficient demonstration of the need for the proposed mast”, that it would “unreasonably detract” from the visual amenity of the area, and because of visibility restrictions at the nearby junction.
