WiSE win Lord Mayor’s honour for Covid support

Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) quickly stepped up to deliver food parcels, shopping and prescriptions to people of all ages, having had to suspend many of its much-loved older persons services when lockdown hit.

Councillors have nominated the cause to be honoured for special recognition by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, as a way of thanking the charity’s army of volunteers.

Mark Dobson, Operations Manager at WiSE, said: “Like many charities on the frontline of caring for isolated, older people we were devastated when the virus forced us to suspend many of our normal, face-to-face activities.

“But our incredible volunteers stepped up in a big way to help the residents of Harewood and Wetherby, regardless of their age, when they really needed it.

“This award is wonderful recognition for all of their hard work and I know it will mean a great deal to them all.”

WiSE was honoured the certificate this week, at an online meeting hosted by the Lord Mayor, Coun Eileen Taylor.

Coun Taylor said: “Leeds wouldn’t be the same without third sector organisations and I am incredibly grateful for each and every charity, community group and voluntary group that improve lives.”

Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) is a registered charity organisation part funded by Leeds City Council. Its aim is to improve quality of life for the over 60s by providing community based activities, information, help and support.
