Wetherby pays tribute on RBL centenary

Wetherby Branch of the Royal British Legion laid wreaths and paid tribute to mark 100 years of the organisation.

Only six members were permitted to attend the parade to the bridge memorial at 9am last Saturday at the same time as various branches throughout the country marked the anniversary.

“Although this was to commemorate the Anniversary we as a branch still observed a two-minute silence for our fallen, Lest we Forget,” said Branch Chairman Major (retired) Tom Smith MBE.

Branch members retired to the New Inn, Wetherby for breakfast, laid on free of charge by the Landlord, Mr Mike Govin

“He has taken the branch under his wing and the Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club, since The Wetherby Social club closed down,” added Mr Smith.

For 100 years the Royal British Legion has been seen as a symbol of hope for the Armed Forces community.

The RBL has always been supported by a network of volunteers, members, fundraisers, and corporate partners to bring people together to support, commemorate and celebrate the Armed Forces community.​

Legion members present at the Wetherby ceremony were: Major (retired) Tom Smith MBE – Branch Chairman; Mr David Dawson – Branch Secretary; Edna Hilditch – Branch President; Jeff Quinn – Branch Vice Chairman; Geoff Richards MBE – Branch Treasurer; Al Hunt – Branch Standard Bearer.
