UCI cycling event gives boost to Harrogate charity

Saint Michael’s Hospice in Harrogate has received a £1,512 boost thanks to Starling Independent Bar Café Kitchen and the UCI cycling championships.

The popular Harrogate independent bar-cahe held the draw during the UCI World Championships, giving customers the chance to win a unique Canyon Grail CF SL 8.0 Di2, complete with bespoke Starling customization and a Yorkshire 2019 limited edition00 cycling kit from clothing maker Rapha.

Starling teamed up with Canyon and Rapha for the championships, providing the the two global brands with event space and a pop- up cycle park at its Oxford Street premises, which was a big success.

Starling owner Simon Midgley said: “Starling always tries to contribute in a positive way to the community that we are part of in Harrogate.

"For me and the team, getting involved in the UCI World Championship was too good an opportunity to pass up.

“Being able to support Saint Michael’s Hospice through the huge generosity of our UCI World Championship partners Canyon and Rapha is perfect.

"It’s great that a global event like this can directly give back to our local community in such a positive way.”

The lucky winner of the draw was Christine Thwaite from Leeds and Jem McPartlin from Canyon UK was also on hand to present the £1,512 to Saint Michael’s with Starling owner Simon Midgley.

Simon opened Starling in March 2017 with 15 years in the food and drinks industry already behind him including 12 years as a director with Harrogate-based Market Town Taverns.

Starling offers 10 craft keg taps and six cask hand pulls, along with a mean gin shelf, a bespoke range of single cask whiskies as well as 12 fine wines by the glass. Starling partners with the Brew Tea Company in Manchester and the Dark Woods Roastery in Marsden near Huddersfield for its specialist hot drinks.

It has featured in the Independent Coffee Guide for the North for three years running and was voted CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2018 for the Harrogate district.

Starling's signature food offering is Neapolitan-style pizza made from scratch using Italian 00 flour and Italian San Marzano tomatoes as the base for their sauce.

An extensive brunch menu featuring a locally sourced Full English or the smashed avo on sourdough is available every day.
