Filming is now underway for an upcoming adaptation of James Herriott’s classic collection of stories, All Creatures Great and Small, which has been commissioned by Channel 5, Playground and Masterpiece on PBS.

And Screen Yorkshire, which is investing in the project, has confirmed that filming is taking place around Nidderdale at the moment - but has said it doesn’t want to reveal specific timings and locations in case of any disruption.

Hugo Heppell, Head of Investments at Screen Yorkshire said: “People all over the world know Yorkshire through James Herriott and All Creatures Great And Small and we are thrilled to see the warmth, the down to earth wit and the generosity of spirit that infuse his stories brought back to the screen for a new generation.”

The television version has been written by Ben Vanstone, best known for The Last Kingdom, and will be directed by Brian Percival, of Downton Abbey.

Newcomer Nicholas Ralph will make his television debut as the iconic vet who became renowned for his inspiring compassion, humour and love of life.

Samuel West, from Mr. Selfridge and On Chesil Beach, joins as Siegfried Farnon, the eccentric veterinary surgeon and proprietor of Skeldale House.

Mrs Hall, the resident housekeeper and matriarch of Skeldale House will be played by Anna Madeley and Siegfried’s younger brother, Tristan, will be played by Callum Woodhouse, who starred in The Durrells.

Rachel Shenton takes the role of Helen Alderson, a local farmer’s daughter who helps her father manage the family farm and care for her younger sister.
