The reopening of traditional butcher’s in Ripon shows the city is still a 'bastion of high quality'

One of Ripon’s few remaining traditional and independent butcher’s is reopening after a refit to the shop.

The award-winning Marleys Butchers has been a favourite of customers in Ripon for years after building up a reputation for quality by sourcing top-tier local meat straight from the farm.

Located at 76 North Street, Ripon, Marleys Butchers are highly regarded for their traditional Yorkshire meats including prime hung ribeye, sirloin, and pork chops.

The recent refurbishment is a sign of the Ripon butcher’s success at a challenging time for traditional, independent butcher shops in general.

The sector has undergone a significant long-term decline in the UK over the past few decades, hit by supermarket dominance, changing consumer habits and rising operating costs.

In 1990, there were approximately 15,000 independent butcher shops in the UK but, by 2010, this has fallrn to 6,380, and by 2023, the number had dropped further to 5,637.
