Sherburn Library recognised in top awards

The County Council’s library service highly commended the volunteer-run library for improved performance.

“We are delighted to win the award as it means our volunteers are at the top of their game,” said Ellen Schofield, Chair of Sherburn library Management Group. “They work very hard and show great commitment to creating a place where members of our community can feel comfortable when searching for something to read or listen to, or to use a computer.

“The anticipation of going to the library is a feeling that we want to keep alive for our regular visitors.

“For those who don’t yet come to the library, our award should encourage you to try us out.”

Sherburn library is currently closed for a refurbishment and the replacement of the roof but is still offers the Home Library Service where books are selected by the library team and dropped off at the doorstep.

Ellen added: “We are very much looking forward to seeing all our regular visitors again and extend a very warm welcome to everyone who may be thinking about coming along to a library. There are a lot of reasons to make it a worthwhile investment of your time.

“Visiting our library is so much more than getting a book.

“When we are able to again, we will reintroduce our story times, visits from schools and events and activities for all ages.”

The library is managed and operated by volunteers at Sherburn in Elmet Community Trust working in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council.

County Council Chairman, Coun Jim Clark, said: “It was an honour to be able to present the award to our hardworking staff and volunteers who have continued to deliver a high-class service despite these unprecedented circumstances.”

“It’s clear that the library is at the heart of the local community.”

County Coun Greg White, Executive Member for Libraries, added: “Sherburn library has set a precedent for providing its users with an invaluable service. This award is a testament to those who have made the service thrive. It has a very bright future indeed.”

Earlier this year, Norton HIVE library and community hub was crowned as the overall winner.

The other libraries to be highly commended for improved performance against the library service’s key indicators are - Bilton and Woodfield community library, Boroughbridge community library and resource centre, Filey community library and South Craven community library.
