And the organisers are looking to reward the many great deeds that will have been done over the course of what has been an extraordinary year.

“The Lions are seeking nominations of those who have gone out of their way to improve lives, make an impact on our lovely town or done something amazing,” said a Lions spokesman.

Last year Lion President Tim was pleased to present Simon Donkin with the much-coveted Wetherby Townsperson of the Year 2019/20 Award in front of an excited crowd at the Dickensian Christmas Market.

“Simon has been involved in organising events in Wetherby for the last 35 years,” said the spokesman.

“It was in fact his 32nd year organising the Community Bonfire this year.

“Simon, known as a very proud and modest person, has never sought any recognition for the work he does for Wetherby behind the scenes.

“Notwithstanding, he has worked with Wetherby Arts Festival, Wetherby Musical Theatre Group and Welcome to Wetherby among many others.”

He was a key person in 2012 in the organisation of the Last Night of the Proms for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

“And on behalf of the Wetherby Lions he has provided the public address system for the Wetherby Duck Race and has been involved in the ‘Wetherby Beer Festival; the Wetherby Christmas Lights Switch On and Remembrance Sunday have also benefited from his input,” added the spokesman.

“As well as holding down a very responsible job Simon always puts Wetherby first and now his name will be etched forever in the town’s history.”

Nominations remain open for 2020/21 and the Lions would like to hear about an exceptional adult in the community who has helped make Wetherby a better place.

People can complete and submit nominee application online at https://www.wetherbylions.org/

The closing date for completed forms is November 30.

Covering the town of Wetherby and the surrounding villages in the district, Wetherby Lions represent Lions Clubs International (LCI).

Focussing mainly on local issues, supporting the young and elderly, Wetherby still responds to national and international events and sees its members come from all walks of the community.
