Sea Cadets boosted by walk and run

But supporter Rainy Marsh, whose family has been involved in the group for over three years, set the challenge of running and walking the Nidderdale Way.

Rainy said: “I wanted to set a challenge for myself to do something to give back to those volunteers and cadets to help raise the lost income to keep the units running.

“So I decided a couple of weeks back to run/walk the Nidderdale way.

“From Harrogate this was a 65 mile journey which took me 30 hours (17 hours of walk/running) from Saturday morning to Sunday lunchtime.

“I did most of the route solo but my nine and 13-year-old boys joined me for six miles out of Ripley near the start and for the last stretch back into Ripley from Hampsthwaite.

“Amazingly I finished it tired and stiff but injury free other than two blisters.”

So far Rainy has raised nearly £500 for the sea cadets to help them be able to support other young people nationally.

The Sea Cadets offers youngsters, aged over 10 years, the chance to sail and row in summer, take part in residential courses, weekly parades and band practices and learn leadership skills and make new friends.

Rainy added: “They are an amazing organisation. Due to Covid-19 the units have lost six months of fundraising to keep the units going whilst still providing the cadets with support though virtual meetings, challenges and opportunities.”
