Pubs see drop in sale as curfew and lockdown bite

Two well known local publicans have told the Wetherby News that although they have a duty to protect customers from the spread of Coronavirus, their businesses are seeing a drop in takings.

Red Lion, Wetherby, landlord David Holmes said: “Since re-opening The Red Lion has traded reasonably well despite the absence of passing trade that we would usually benefit from during July - September.

“The 10pm curfew reduced our trading capacity by a further 10 per cent.

“The more significant issue is the ‘Leeds Lockdown’ advising no mixing between households.”

Mr Holmes said the delay in allowing spectators into Wetherby Races is expected to have a ‘significant’ impact.

Landlord of the Fox and Hounds in Walton and Wetherby councillor Alan Lamb added: “Our first priority is always the safety of our staff and customers and so we will adapt to whatever changes are required of us.

“It’s a challenging time for the pub trade but as we worked hard to support our customers during lockdown, so they have been fantastic in cooperating and supporting us with the rule changes.

“There’s no doubt the situation is affecting turnover but we keep adapting. We are still delivering takeaway meals and high quality baked goods and groceries.”
