£5,000 boost for primary school thanks to Harrogate shoppers at Tesco store

Harrogate shoppers have helped bring a £5,000 boost for improvements at a primary school.

Customers at Killinghall Express store were given the chance last month to take part in a lucky dip to find a specially created gold version of Tesco’s famous blue voting token.

Friends of Ashlands Primary School was one of three local charities that customers could vote for to receive the £5,000 Golden Grant as part of Tesco’s Stronger Starts scheme.

As a result of the scheme, the school in Ilkley will be able to grow its Community Flower Meadow with the help of Friends of Ashlands.

Nicola Holmes, Chairperson at Friends of Ashlands Primary School, said: “We are overwhelmed and incredibly grateful to Tesco's for this Golden Grant which will allow pupils at the school to plant and grow our beloved community Flower Meadow for many years to come.”

Golden Grants are awarded twice a year as part of Tesco’s £8 million Stronger Starts grant programme, in partnership with the charity Groundwork UK.

Stronger Starts grants help schools and children’s groups provide nutritious food and healthy activities that support young people’s physical health and mental wellbeing, such as breakfast clubs, as well as purchasing equipment for healthy activities.

More than 100 Tesco stores across the country took part in the Golden Grants event this year, with £500,000 in total being donated to good causes that help children and young people.

Since Tesco launched its Community Grants programme in 2016, more than £120 million has been awarded.
