Prepare for roadworks on hundreds of Harrogate streets in £50m improvements programme

Hundreds of streets in the Harrogate area are scheduled for road works and road closures in the coming months as the highways authority makes the most of reduced traffic during the lockdown to make comprehensive repairs to our tired and potholed road network.

As well as continuing to deliver roads maintenance during the Covid-19 outbreak to ensure key workers and those who deliver crucial services and deliver food supplies can travel in safety, North Yorkshire County Council is starting action next month to address the poor condition of roads across the county.

There will be resurfacing, patching and surface-dressing as the county council makes the most of the expected £15.16 million from the Government’s Pothole Action Fund.

Surface dressing is taking place on 76 Kilometres (47 miles) of the network in the Harrogate District, at a cost of £2.4 million at more than 200 sites with the programme starting at the end of May.

Patching is taking place on 68 kilometres (42 miles) of the network, starting this week at 65 sites.

In addition, the county council’s Local Full Fibre Network scheme is continuing, within Covid-19 guidance, with work ongoing at Knaresborough High Street.

North Yorkshire County Council's executive member for access, Coun Don Mackenzie said: “Roads and footways are very empty at the moment and so all works on the public highways are able to proceed with little disruption.

"In addition, NYCC’s broadband company, NYnet, continues to receive orders from clients to upgrade services as huge demands are made on digital infrastructure."

The first resurfacing work will take place in the next seven days in locations outside Harrogate town centre including Burn Bridge, Clint Bank to Wreaks Road (B6165 Xroads to C256), A61 Harrogate to Bishop Monkton X Roads, Minskip roundabout and A61 Buttersyke Bar to Harewood Bridge at Dunkeswick.

But, as NYCC implements more of its total annual road repairs budget of almost £50m, it will hit most places.
