Following the untimely death of Coun Wilkinson in 2019, the Wetherby ward members wanted to find a way of celebrating his good work in the ward, particularly the tireless campaign for better play facilities for children and families.

The renaming of the play area at Deepdale was decided upon as an apt and fitting tribute.

Councillors Alan Lamb, Norma Harrington and Linda Richards (Conservative, Wetherby) said in a statement: “The Deepdale play area was one of last projects Coun Wilkinson worked on, and as such we believe it is a really fitting tribute to rename it in his honour.

“As a long-time resident of Boston Spa, he dedicated so much time and worked so hard to ensure young people and families got the facilities they deserved, and we’re all incredibly proud of his achievements.

“This renaming ensures that the legacy of his work will continue to be felt by Boston Spa families long into the future.”
