Tesco is still coming to Harrogate, the Advertiser can reveal, despite revealing today that it is to scrap plans for 49 new stores across the country.
The supermarket giant has revealed a raft of changes amid falling sales and profit margins, including closing 43 unprofitable stores across the UK and its staff pension scheme.
It also said it was shelving plans to open 49 new “very large” stores - prompting fears for the future of the Harrogate Skipton Road site.
But, the Advertiser can reveal, Harrogate’s Tesco store is to go ahead as planned.
Dave Lewis, Chief Executive Officer, said: “We’ve carefully reviewed our planned new store developments across the country and it remains our intention to open our planned store in Harrogate. We continue to believe that the store will provide a valued service to the local community.
“The new store will provide a great shopping experience as well as bringing new jobs and investment to the area.”
