Knaresborough’s newest museum is putting a £1,000 cash boost to good use by launching a major summer programme for children.

Having first opened its doors at the end of April after years of work by Knaresborough Museum Association on behalf of the community, Knaresborough Town Museum has lost no time in making its presence felt in throwing a spotlight in the town’s rich heritage.

Boasting a heritage centre shop, a kidzone, and a current exhibition on the geology and archaeology of Knaresborough, the centre recently received a £1,000 Inspire Fund grant from North Yorkshire Council.

KMA volunteer, living historian and textile designer, Tabbetha Atyeo, is to lead a fun packed range of workshops for children aged five to nine years.

The wide-ranging workshops will include Prehistoric cave painting, Roman and medieval calligraphy, creating Viking Shields and Tudor pomanders, as well as Second World War Crumb Fudge and lots more besides.

The workshops will run from Tuesday, July 23 until the end of August every Tuesday and Thursday from 11am and 1.30pm and last about an hour.

Tabbetha has been running workshops for children for 20 years, uses authentic material when she runs her workshops and dresses up in period costume to boot.

The workshops cost £10, including materials, and KMA request that children are always accompanied by an adult.

Tabbetha will be on hand for a family-focused talk on the History of Medieval clothing entitled Medieval Clothes from the Inside out which will take place at the Centre on Gracious Street on Tuesday, August 20 at 6pm.

KMA is also running a summer raffle from the end of July with two hampers up for grabs.
