More in Common Harrogate & Knaresborough will 'bring people together across difference' this week

Harrogate is to mark the tenth anniversary of the murder of MP Jo Cox with a free festival this week to show that “we have more in common than what divides us”.

This Saturday’s event will not only mark ten years since Cox was killed by a former member of the BNP but also the launch of The Great Get Together, one of the UK's largest annual community celebrations inspired by the life of the late Labour MP for Batley and Spen.

The Harrogate contribution to this annual family-friendly fun event, organised for the second year by More in Common Network Harrogate & Knaresborough, will take place at the West Park Centre from 12.30pm to 4.30pm.

Coming together for the occasion in a spirit of internationalism and sharing will be Afghan Kitchen, Harrogate's Ukrainian community and the Islamic Association, alongside the Wellbeing Choir, a local DJ, Mimesis and Rossett High School music students.

Also expect dancing from Dancing for Wellbeing, arts and crafts with artist Katie Edwards, children's storytelling with Francine Holdroyd and games with Francesca Pezzino.

There will also be fresh food donated by local businesses, cafes and traders with a café space for people to sit, eat and chat.

Jo Webb, Chair, More in Common Network Harrogate & Knaresborough: "We have more in common than that which divides us.

"The Great Get Together is our chance to celebrate that with music, food, creativity, and conversation.

"Everyone is welcome and everything is free, come along on your own, with your family or with friends.

"I want to thank all the community groups, businesses and individuals who are giving their time, energy and donations to make this happen.

"Their support, and that of the North Yorkshire Inspire Fund, makes this free event possible."

There will also be raffle with prizes donated by local businesses.

More in Common Network Harrogate & Knaresborough is a local community network dedicated to bringing people together across difference.

The network is also preparing to launch a More in Common Charter in the coming weeks.

The event is supported by the North Yorkshire Inspire community fund.
