Members of 'thriving' Wheel Easy club will celebrate 20th anniversary in Harrogate on their bikes

A leading Harrogate community group which began with a gathering of 35 cyclists will this weekend celebrate 20 successful years.

Founded in 2006 by Gia and Malcolm Margolis, Wheel Easy was built on a simple but powerful idea - that cycling should be accessible, sociable, and fun for everyone, regardless of age, ability or bike.

The first ride on May 7, 2006 attracted 35 cyclists but has since grown into something far greater than anyone could have imagined.

It is now one of the largest leisure cycling clubs in the UK., with 265 members.

Harrogate may not have turned into a cyclist’s paradise but it now boasts a strong cycling community.

The club’s 20-year milestone will see the members of Wheel Easy Harrogate, under chair Steve Bungay, celebrate with an anniversary ride on Sunday, June 7, followed by tea at Harrogate Hockey Club.

Open, inclusive and friendly and caters for all levels of leisure cycling, this Cycling UK affiliated leisure cycling club that exists to promote and facilitate leisure cycling in the Harrogate district.

Since its early days, Wheel Easy Harrogate has racked up nearly a thousand Sundays of riding plus many regular Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday rides, awaydays and longer trips.

Wheel Easy cyclists have explored countless Yorkshire lanes, ventured abroad, weathered a pandemic, and built a community that goes well beyond the bike.

The club is non-competitive and supports, but is not directly involved in, lobbying on cycling-related matters.
