Throughout May, Switalskis can draw up a simple will or a pair of mirror wills as part of the annual scheme – which is offering wills free for the first time this year.

Zara Shillito, individual giving fundraiser at Martin House, said: “The past year has made us all too painfully aware of the fragility of life, and the importance of making sure that our loved ones are looked after if the worst should happen.

“Making a will is an important part of that, and our Make a Will Month gives you the opportunity to get your affairs in order for free.”

Martin House cares for babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions from across West, North and East Yorkshire, as well as supporting their families.

Its care includes planned respite, symptom control, emergency and end of life care, as well as bereavement support.

Currently, one in four children are cared for thanks to money left in wills, but as the number of children with life-shortening conditions increases, demand for the service continues to grow.

It costs nearly £9 million a year to run Martin House, and the hospice has lost £2.2 million in fundraising income during the past year due to the effects of the pandemic.

Zara added: “While there is no obligation to leave a gift in your will, or make a donation to Martin House as part of this scheme, we hope people will consider leaving a legacy.

“By choosing to leave money to Martin House, you are helping us safeguard our future and continue to support families when they need us most for years to come.”

Solicitors taking part in Make a Will Month all have measures in place to enable people to make their wills safely in line with government Covid guidelines.
