Lockdown poetry competition for Harrogate children launched by Rotary club

Harrogate Brigantes Rotary Club has come up with an activity to keep the under 12s happily and creatively occupied for a good while with the support of the Harrogate Advertiser - the Lockdown Lyrics poetry competition.

It is launching this week and will run till the end of the summer term on July 17.

All children have to do is to write as many poems as they like (each of no more than 28 lines) on one or more of the following subjects:

A Better World

I Wish

My Hero

So that they can feel they’re also helping do some good in the present difficult circumstances there’s a £5 entry fee per child.

This will go into Brigantes’ Covid Relief Fund and be distributed to help worthwhile local causes and organisations.

And the young poets could win a prize!

The writer of the best poem on each subject will receive a £30 book token.

Club member Guy Wilson who directs the Kids Aloud programme of children’s concerts, said: “When Covid-19 struck we were making plans for “Save our Planet” “concerts next year in the Royal Hall, linked with an exhibition by the children in Ripon Cathedral and a poetry competition.

"Sadly we have had to cancel, or at least postpone, all these.

"But then it struck us that, using our good contacts with schools, we could run a different poetry competition.

"Then the Harrogate Advertiser agreed to help promote the competition and we are very grateful to them for the opportunity to open the competition to a far wider range of children.”

If you have children or grandchildren under 12-years-old you could get them doing something worthwhile, and help Brigantes make a difference.
