Leap Year Campaign - What is it like to be a nurse at Saint Michael's Hospice in Harrogate?

Throughout February, the Harrogate Advertiser Leap Year Appeal with Saint Michael’s Hospice aims to raise £15,500 to cover the cost of an extra day of care this leap year.

Nurses care for patients on Saint Michael’s Inpatient Unit 24 hours a day, and this year, for 366 days.

Amy Mills and Lizzie Kirkwood are both staff nurses on the Inpatient Unit. Amy has worked for Saint Michael’s for nearly a year, and Lizzie for nearly two years. Their roles involve working as part of the multi-disciplinary team to assess, plan, implement, deliver and evaluate specialist palliative nursing care for patients.

Amy, who was previously one of Saint Michael’s student nurses, said: “Nursing in a hospice environment means we can spend more time with patients and their families, building a rapport with them.”

When asked why prospective nurses should consider a career with Saint Michael’s, Lizzie said: “I’d encourage any nurse to consider joining our friendly team. We’re really well supported and have the opportunity to provide personalised care, looking after patients with a variety of needs.”
