Harrogate tribute night 20 years after Amy Winehouse's Back to Black album hit number one

Popular Harrogate music event Vinyl Sessions is to return next month with a tribute to the great Amy Winehouse.

The classic album chosen for the return of Harrogate’s unique listening experience after the summer break will be Back to Black which is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Since the legendary British singer with the powerful, smoky vocals and brilliant songwriting died in 2011 at the age of 27, her reputation has, if anything, grown.

Her second and final original album was a huge critical and commercial success when it was first released in 2006, reaching No 1 In the UK, and going on to be the best-selling album of 2007.

Among the classic songs are Rehab, You Know I'm No Good, Love Is a Losing Game and the title track.

Although her rich, jazz-inflected contralto voice was reminiscent of of legendary singers like Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan, producer Mark Ronson steered her towards classic 1950s and 60s soul and R&B on Back to Black with modern jazz and hip-hop influences.

Taking place on Wednesday, October 14 at Starling Independent Bar Cafe Kitchen in Harrogate, Vinyl Sessions has raised more than £25,000 for Harrogate Hospital since it launched in 2018.

Most recently, it has hit its latest target of £10,000 to fund a new parents bathroom at Harrogate District Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit.

Offering artist Insights and vinyl albums plus amazing audio – both vintage and new – the event is helmed by its founder Colin Paine and also features resident music historian, Graham Chalmers of the Harrogate Advertiser, a former artistic director of Harrogate International Festivals Fringe and organiser of Charm gigs and events.

There will also a presentation of relevant video slides to accompany the sounds on vintage hi fi.

As well as the vinyl album, this unique musical charity event also offers the occasional ‘in conversation with’ guest.

In the past there have been memorable live appearances by David Bowie/Beatles producer Ken Scott, Syd Barrett biographer Rob Chapman, Queen Extravaganza drummer George Farrar and Chris Simpson, founder of Magna Carta.
