A football match has been postponed just an hour before kick off - after a huge power outage affecting 2,500 properties hit Yorkshire.

Harrogate Town AFC were due to play Carlisle United in a League 2 fixture on Tuesday evening.

However, the club were forced to postpone shortly before kickoff due to a major power outage in the area.

The club released a statement on their website.

It read: "Due to a local power outage affecting over 2,500 properties in the surrounding area, tonight's fixture against Carlisle United at The EnviroVent has been postponed.

"Any supporters who purchased a streaming pass for the fixture will be eligible for a full refund, or to stream the rearranged fixture at no extra cost

"For a refund, please contact us via email - [email protected].

"A new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.

"Apologies for any inconvenience caused."

In a message to local residents on their live map, Northern Powergrid said their "team are working hard to restore your power as quickly as possible".

The power cut was first reported at 6.44pm on Tuesday.

Power is due to be restored by 10.15pm according to Northern Powergrid.
