Former Harrogate Town player's 'key role' in Coventry City’s triumphant return to Premier League
A brilliant Harrogate-born footballer is celebrating playing a key role in Coventry City’s triumphant promotion to the Premier League.
Former Harrogate Town and Leeds Utd defender Liam Kitching has been almost ever-present in the Sky Blues’ first 11 this season as a highly-rated centre half.
And he was selected once again by manager Frank Lampard on Friday when Coventry secured promotion from the Championship on Friday with a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers.
A former pupil of Rossett High School, Liam Kitching was at Leeds Utd when he joined Harrogate Town on loan in 2018 at the age of 19.

Known as an aggressive defender talented enough to score goals, Liam’s first appearance for Harrogate came as a substitute in a 4–1 victory over Stockport County before making his first start for Harrogate in February 2018 in a 3–1 victory over Leamington, in which he scored the first goal of his senior career.
The same month saw his loan extended until the end of the season.
After making nine league appearances for Harrogate that season, scoring three goals as Town were promoted to the National League.
In July 2018, Kitching signed a new contract with Leeds United before rejoining Harrogate on a six-month loan deal.
In January 2019, his loan was extended until the end of the season, after scoring three goals in 25 appearances during the first half of the season.
Across the 2018–19 season, Kitching appeared in 34 league games for Harrogate, scoring twice.
Liam's final appearance for Harrogate Town came during the club's National League play-off defeat at AFC Fylde in May 2019.
In September 2023, Kitching transferred to Coventry City, scoring his first goal in February 2024 against Plymouth Argyle.
This season has seen Liam Kitching make 39 appearances for Coventry City in total so far.
Liam will be sharing the limelight with his teammates on Bank Holiday Monday when Coventry City take part in a Bus Parade through the city to celebrate the club’s promotion to the Premier League.
In February 2026, it was announced that Kitching had signed a new contact with Coventry City.
