Flags fly high instead of blooms

Villagers have put up flags where the summer display of hanging baskets would normally go, due to workers at the Leeds City Council nursery plants supplier being sent home in March.

“Boston in Bloom were looking at a colourful alternative,” said a spokesman.

“The theme for the designs on the flags was open with flowers, birds, sky, rainbows, grass, butterflies, animals some of the suggestions.”

And the flags are made of fabric, sewn/stitched, with appliqué, embroidery or patchwork, single-thickness.

Boston Spa in Bloom was formed in 2006 to enhance the visual appearance of the village through the installation and maintenance of plants and hanging baskets.

Since then it has planted thousands of daffodils, created new beds, planters and troughs.

Each summer it installs and maintains over 80 hanging brackets along the High Street.

In the spring and autumn it plants out the beds, planters and troughs.

The Boston Spa in Bloom are hoping to turn the flags into a tapestry after they are taken down at the end of the summer.
