'Damning' new rail performance study reveals why Harrogate passengers are so frustrated

New data shows the rail company serving Harrogate passengers as one of the top five ‘least reliable’ operators for delays and cancellations in the UK.

The study by Bet Clever analysed new data from the Office of Rail and Road between August 2024 and August 2025, evaluating 20 UK rail operators on their punctuality, percentage of cancelled trains, and average passenger delays to create a performance score out of 100.

The most reliable operator according to https://betclever.com is Greater Anglia, with a performance score of 97.16, average delays of 1.37 minutes, 83.81% of trains on time, and a cancellation rate of 1.30%

The most unreliable operator is Avanti West Coast, ranked 20th with a performance score of 7.84, average delays of 10.61 minutes, 38.90% of trains on time, and a cancellation rate of 3.98%.

Northern Trains, which serves the majority of the North, including Leeds, York, Knaresborough and Harrogate, is rated the fourth-least reliable train operator.

The study shows Northern passengers experiencing average delays of 4.51 minutes, 58.12% of trains on time, and a cancellation rate of 4.28%.

The disappointing results come at in the same week as the Government’s announcement of the revival of Northern Powerhouse Rail which will see £45 billion of upgrades.

Northern, which was nationalised in March 2020, is the second largest train operator in the UK and has seen rising demand since the end of Covid lockdowns.

Last autumn, Northern recorded its busiest month of customer travel since before the pandemic, with more than 8.1 million journeys made across its network between September 14 and October 11, 2025.

The figure marks an annual increase of 8.3% and is the highest number of journeys in a four-week window since February 2020.

At the same time, passenger frustration is also growing.

Roberto Romanello from Bet Clever, said: "These statistics show significant differences in the reliability of train services across the UK.

"The stark contrast between operators suggests that reliability issues cannot simply be blamed on infrastructure alone, as some operators clearly manage to maintain much better performance than others on the same rail network."
