Council leader pays tribute to Norman Hunter

The former centre-back, who remains one of the most decorated players in the club’s history, passed away in hospital on Thursday morning following a battle with coronavirus.

Hunter amassed more than 700 appearances between 1962 and 1977, during which time he won almost every honour the game can offer.

Leader of Leeds City Council Coun Judith Blake said: “I am absolutely heartbroken to hear the tragic news that Norman has passed away.

“He was a legend on the pitch and an absolute gentleman off it. It was a true honour to see him awarded the Freedom of the City with his teammates last December.

“Along with thousands of people in Leeds and beyond Norman Hunter was a hero of mine and I have treasured memories of watching him play as a child.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, former teammates and everyone connected with Leeds United. This is a very sad day for the city of Leeds.”

Hunter, affectionately known as ‘Bites Yer Legs’ due to his combative playing style, was part of the great Don Revie Leeds United side of the 1960s and 70s, before being one of the squad to reach the European Cup final in 1975. He won two league titles, an FA Cup and two Intercities Fairs Cups.

Hunter was also part of England’s victorious 1966 World Cup squad.

The management, players and back-room team associated with the whites’ “Revie-era” side of 1967-1974 were given freedom of the city following a ceremony at Leeds Civic Hall last year,

The accolade came following the club’s 2019 centenary celebrations, and recognised those who starred in the club’s most successful period.

Hunter appeared at a ceremony at Leeds Civic Hall with other Leeds United greats including Johnny Giles, Allan Clarke, Mick Jones, Paul Reaney, Frank Gray, Terry Cooper, Peter Lorimer, Gordon McQueen and Eddie Gray.
