Celebrating 50 years of Harrogate floral extravaganza which became one of Britain’s premier gardening events
Harrogate Autumn Flower Show is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of being one of Britain’s premier gardening events.
Famed for its Grand Floral Pavilion and Giant Vegetable Competition, among other floral delights, this hugely popular event was founded in 1975 by the North of England Horticultural Society (NEHS).
The very first Harrogate Autumn Flower Show was held in the Valley Gardens in Harrogate in 1976 but moved to Newby Hall five years ago where it now attracts more than 30,000 visitors annually.
Now as it approaches its 50th anniversary, the award‑winning Newby Hall estate is gearing up to host the event from Friday, September 18 to Sunday, September 20 in spectacular style.

This year’s programme will feature world‑class floral displays, fruit and vegetable competitions and live demonstrations, alongside a major new installation inside Newby Hall itself.
Acclaimed floral designer and TV garden expert Jonathan Moseley will transform the historic interiors with Grain & Grandeur - The Harvest Ball, a celebration of autumn’s abundance that will be on show throughout the house for the duration of the event.
Culinary events will be led by celebrity chef and regional food champion Stephanie Moon, who will create a series of 1970s‑inspired seasonal dishes in one of Newby’s kitchen gardens.
The space is being opened exclusively for the show’s anniversary by the Compton family, the 10th generation of the family to live on the estate.
Stuart Gill, commercial director at Newby Hall, said: “This unique collaboration provides the ultimate Yorkshire day out with something for all the family, giving visitors the opportunity to combine the very best in seasonal horticulture with heritage and family-friendly experiences in one of Yorkshire’s most spectacular settings.”
Organised by the North of England Horticultural Society (NEHS), the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show offers visitors not only the chance to enjoy the event but also to enjoy Newby Hall’s historic house and award-winning gardens, including the newly-restored Edwardian rock garden.
Family-friendly experiences include the adventure playground, a miniature railway and permanent exhibitions of dolls’ houses and teddy bears.
Children under 16 and carers go free.
