LETTERS: Where does £30m figure for Harrogate traffic plans come from?

Where does £30m cost come from?

May I add my thoughts to the debate.

Coun Mackenzie either has a very short memory or is being disingenuous when he asserts that the cost of reinstating two - way traffic on Parliament Street/ West Park would be £30m.

Does he not remember how quickly the traffic islands and street furniture were removed to accommodate the UCI World Cycling Championships just two years ago?

I doubt that the cost was more than tens of thousands of pounds.

It is patently obvious to all thinking people that proceeding with the Gateway project without compensating adjustments would be madness and would simply cause huge congestion and more pollution.

A two-way solution on Parliament Street/ West Park may not be ideal but it has to be a better solution than trying to either squeeze traffic on one lane along Station Parade or allow it to find other rat runs.

OPINION: I fully agree with rejecting call for two-way traffic on Parliament Street and West Park - Don MackenzieI recall, as a Knaresborough resident, just a few years ago being told by NYCC Highways that a two roundabout solution at Bond End (to minimise air pollution due to standing traffic) would not work and would not be considered as an option.

Yet after significant public pressure NYCC gave way and we now have reduced air pollution and moving traffic.

Why does Coun Mackenzie stubbornly refuse to listen?

We are simply told that he is “not prepared” to even commission a feasibility study at relatively minimal cost.

This is a disgraceful way for an elected official to behave and he should either change his mind or resign in favour of someone else.
