At the beginning of Volunteers’ Week (June 1-7), I’d like to use your letters page to say a public thank you to the army of volunteers who have come forward to help our small charity during the Covid crisis.

Since lockdown began over 250 people have signed up as a ‘Here to HELP’ volunteer offering practical and emotional support to those who are self-isolating or shielding in Harrogate and Ripon.

Just this week our volunteers have hit a significant milestone, completing over 1,000 tasks including shopping and prescription pick ups and telephone befriending to ensure people are safe and well supported during lockdown.

As the organisation supporting charities and championing community action across the Harrogate district we have been inspired by the fantastic efforts of local people helping their friends, neighbours, even complete strangers.

As we start to emerge from the crisis and restrictions are lifted further, the most vulnerable in our community will still need our support. We will be playing our part to sustain this community spirit and root social solidarity in our every day lives so that the Harrogate district can thrive once more.
